Thanksgiving is the time to get together with friends and family to celebrate what you’re thankful for in life, while eating turkey and all the other basic traditional dishes. Most people simply sit down and eat with their families, yet others have interesting traditions they perform each year with the family. Here are five unique traditions celebrated by AHN families.
Freshman, Samantha Miller stated, “We fly up to Cleveland, Ohio every year to my grandma’s house and visit my dad’s side of the family. We all get together and make food and watch football on TV. It’s nice to go up and visit because I used to live in Ohio most of my life and I miss it.”
Junior, Emily Anderson stated, “Normally every year my family and I wake up to watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade and make pancakes and eat an early dinner, then my sisters and I go Black Friday shopping. This year we are switching up our Thanksgiving tradition and we are going on a Disney Fantasy Ship cruise, which goes to Disney’s private island, St. Kitts, St. Thomas, U.S. British Virgin Islands and having dinner there for Thanksgiving.”
Junior, Talia Sharrieff shares, “Our family Thanksgiving tradition is after we do all the basic traditional things on Thanksgiving with our family and they leave, my parents and I go to Steak n’ Shake to drink milkshakes and talk about the happenings of the night. It gives us the immediate-family time we need after a busy Thanksgiving day.”
Senior, Alexis Miniet stated, “Ever since I can remember my family and I drive up to Miami and we visit my dad’s side of the family and have Thanksgiving dinner there, so we eat a lot of Spanish food at his sister’s house and then we have all our cousins, aunts, and uncles there. We normally attend a sporting event, like a Marlin’s game.”
Each family has their own unique traditions that differ from everyone else’s. Their traditions are based off not only their culture but their families prior traditions. Overall, Thanksgiving is day of thanks that is celebrated in various ways across America.
