Student Council Puts On The Haunted Basement
November 1, 2017
On Oct. 29, Academy hosted the annual Trunk or Treat event, and the high school Student Council set up the Haunted Basement. Equipped with costumes and makeup, the students spent the evening scaring the kids who chose to enter. Students who participated in the Haunted Basement always look forward to it.
“It gives me the chance to interact with the elementary and middle schools. It’s fun to dress up and scare kids,” Gabby Galvez (‘18) said.
Each year, Student Council members decide on a theme for the students to follow when dressing up. Past themes have included zombies and clowns, but this year’s theme was broader than the past, classic Halloween monsters, which allowed Student Council to dress up as many different monsters such as dolls and zombies nurses.
In order to enter the basement, students must donate one canned food item but are encouraged to donate more than one. The food is then donated to Metropolitan Ministries.
Senior Olivia Traud (‘18) will be doing the makeup for the Haunted Basement for her third year along with a select group of students.
“It’s always been interesting because makeup isn’t a skill of mine and I also like scaring people,” Mia Torres (‘18) said.
The process starts early; students start to get made up as soon as they arrive and get into costume. Many students sported unique makeup looks including a clown and a ventriloquist dummy.
Seniors were excited to partake in their last Haunted Basement but also sad that they will be leaving it behind. “It’s hard because it’s one of the things I look forward to every year. It’s a fun way to spend time with other student council members and scare children,” Jackie Beltram (‘18).
