Microeconomics is a required course at many colleges and universities.

In the recent 2018-19 school year, Academy began to offer the new course, AP Microeconomics. Commonly called AP Micro, is a course taught by Beth Chase with the purpose of giving students an understanding of economics, that can be applied to decision making within the economic world.

Chase says, “My goal for AP Microeconomics is to give the students an in-depth knowledge of the tools economists use to measure the different sectors that make up our economy and what goes in to evaluating the constant ups and downs of the economic cycle that we experience. It is a challenging course but one that I feel will benefit each student by knowing how the economy is evaluated and how changes in the economy will affect their lives.”

As of right now, it is only a semester class, but will change to a year-long class next year. Furthermore, this class is not a mandatory class, but an elective for students who have previously taken Economics.

Theresa Tulsiak (’19) says, “I’m expecting it to be a significant challenge given it being the only AP class offered as a semester, but I have full confidence we’ll be prepared for the exam. Mrs. Chase always makes the class engaging and I know it’ll be a good opportunity to experience how an actual college class will function to prepare us seniors for next year.”

The national passing rate of the AP Microeconomics exam is 67.1%, meaning that 67 percent of students who take this course score a 3 or higher on the official AP exam.

Morgan Farrior (’19) says, “I know it’s going to be difficult but I enjoyed economics honors last year so I decided to give it a try. Also, Mrs. Chase teaches it so I am super excited.”
