Natural remedies can be more beneficial to the body versus taking medication. Although the time to heal may take longer, natural treatments go beyond fixing the problem and can be used as a preventative.

Sometimes pain can come unexpectedly during the school day and going to the nurse is not always an option due to an important lesson or test in class. Many girls have discovered natural ways  to relieve themselves in order to get through their classes:

Headaches

There are many reasons for headaches, from dehydration to lack of sleep. There are six easy ways in which one can naturally cure any kind of headache:

  1. Drink a lot of water.
  2. Orange tea
  3. Peppermint tea
  4. Naps
  5. Breathing in through the nose out through the mouth.
  6. Vicks massaged on the temples of head

Sophomore Rebekah Eicholtz says, “I am really active so sometimes I am not drinking enough water and I am sweating a lot. I’ll usually have one when I wake up so during the school day I’ll have to make sure that I am constantly drinking water to make up for it the day before.”

Cramps

At an all girls school there are many things students find in common, one of them being cramps. As much as over the counter pain medication can do the trick, they don’t always work in time. Two things to avoid when fighting cramps are caffeine and sugar. Instead, grab a banana or anything high in potassium.

Audrey Diaz suggest laying in a yoga’s childs, or puppy, pose to help with the pain.

“Mrs. LeBlanc was the one who told me about it and it works every time,” says Diaz.

Stomach Aches

When it comes to uncomfortable stomach aches, the two things that have been said to help treat irritation are ginger ale, served hot or cold, or ginger tea. When it comes to the stomach, the more natural the healing technique, the more beneficial it is. Some people have a sensitive stomachs and medication can be too harsh which makes natural remedies even more convenient. Depending on the cause of the stomach ache, the B.R.A.T (banana, rice, applesauce, and toast) diet can help ensure that the stomach can settle.

Senior Tess Jakubiec promises that this drink works miracles, saying, “I stock up on these because I have a sensitive stomach and they never fail to work.”

Senior Megan Matter says “I just prefer something warm when my stomach hurts because it just calms it down. Some people can’t handle how strong ginger tastes but I really enjoy it.”

Nausea

Acupuncture, peppermint tea, and ginger tea have been the top natural remedies for nausea. If pressure is applied to a spot below the wrist for five minutes it can help ease some of the feeling.

Although most of the natural supplies to heal any sort of pain involves substances that may be unobtainable during the day, it is helpful to keep tea bags in a lunchbox or book bag. The water machines throughout the school contain hot water and can be an easy way to create whatever tea for those abrupt situations.
