The goal of the monthly competitions is to promote healthy and fun competition between the grades as they receive points for each event. At the end of the year, the winner receives the prized spirit stick.

On Oct. 30, Golden Girls promoted a school-wide dress up competition tag day for Halloween. The freshman dressed up boxers from the movie Rocky, sophomores dressed as Risky Business, juniors dressed like characters from Toy Story, and seniors dressed as The Cheetah Girls.

Each grade then photographed the best dressed from their class, and submitted their candidate to the teachers to vote on. Freshman won, followed by seniors, juniors, and sophomores in fourth place.

Students can see the points on the Golden Girls announcement bulletin board outside of Melissa LeBlanc’s classroom, N206.

October’s event also benefitted Student Council’s canned food drive. November’s competition will have a turkey theme where by Nov. 16, whichever turkey has the most decorated “feathers”, percentage wise of the number of students in the grade, will be the winner, as voted by the teachers.

Lindsey Ayers (‘19), a member of the newly created mini-committee in charge of the points and schedule of monthly events says, ”For the Thanksgiving Turkeys in the foyer we are really looking for creative designs and personal things you are thankful for. They will be judged on presentation and originality.”

“For the future of the mini committee, expect lots of fun competitions and fun tag days. We focus on planning something special for each big holiday or month, so expect something new and exciting, ” Ayers says.

December’s event will be the annual door decorating contest between homerooms, and all the points will be added for the grade’s total score. There will be a panel of teachers judging the holiday doors.

The Golden Girls are still brainstorming January’s competition, but February will most likely be some kind of candy grams. Don’t forget about Catholic School’s Week Sprit Week, the first week of Feb. 2018.

“I think the spirit events are fun because they bring different grades together. The point system is smart since it makes the grade actually participate in the events and it puts a drive in people to come to the different sport events and such,” Lyric Vickers (‘18) said.
