‘Perks of a Wallflower’ brings back memories of ninth grade life

The Perks of Being a Wallflower is like no other movie of its genre. Based on the book, written by Stephen Chbosky, this movie takes place in the 1990s from the perspective of a teenage boy named Charlie who writes letters about his daily life to an unknown person.  Actors Logan Lerman, Emma Watson, and Ezra Miller portray the three main characters: Charlie, Sam, and Patrick.

As the movie begins, Charlie has spent his whole summer with his sister and parents because of past events in his life that continue to torment him. On his first day of high school, Charlie is already counting how many days he has left before he graduates.

Charlies finally finds friends at a football game, where he finds himself alone, as usual, in the stands. After hearing shouts and cheers from Patrick, Charlie introduces himself.  Soon after, Patrick’s step-sister Sam comes up into the stands and greets them, and thus the theme of the movie develops:  three unlikely characters become friends and share the hardships of high school life.

The actors bring the main characters to life for those who have read the novel. For those who have not, one movie-goer said “I was a little confused at first, but by the end everything made sense. It was a well thought-out script.”

This movie makes for a good family movie with tears, laughter, and a look at high school life from a perspective of a freshman who only has had his family as friends.
