New principal Mrs. Jowanna likes ‘family feeling’ at Academy

When asked what drew her to the Academy, new principal Mrs.Camille Jowanna responded that Academy has an impressive reputation.  In addition, the idea of the small size and all girls “create a very strong family feeling.”  After learning she had been selected as principal, Mrs. Jowanna remembers being in a state of shock at the enormous opportunity she had been given.

Mrs. Jowanna’s ultimate goal for Academy is to make better use of technology and have the latest technology in all classrooms.  Because in college everything is done electronically and paper has become outdated, she wants to make sure that all Academy girls are up to the technology standards of college.

Born in New York, Mrs. Jowanna moved to Tampa at age ten.  Kindergarten through eighth grade, she attended Catholic school.  Beyond high school, Mrs. Jowanna earned a Bachelor of Science in biology and chemistry from the University of Tampa.  In addition, she earned a Master of Arts in teaching from the University of Tampa and a Master of Arts in Educational Administration from the University of Notre Dame.

This is Mrs. Jowanna’s twenty-seventh year working in the Catholic education system.  During the past twenty-six years, she has been a chemistry teacher, Science Department Chairperson, and Dean of Students at Cardinal Gibbons in Ft. Lauderdale, Clearwater Central Catholic, and, most recently, Tampa Catholic

Mrs. Jowanna is one of seven children, with five brothers and one sister.  She has been married to her husband for eighteen years and is the proud owner of an English bulldog, Brittany.  Mrs. Jowanna listens to all genres of music including current, adult contemporary, and classical.   Her favorite movie is The Wizard of Oz.  She also enjoys watching football, cheering on the Fighting Irish, and playing golf when she has the time.

As the new principal Mrs. Jowanna wants all Academy students to know that she is “open, when you need to talk to someone.”  So whether a student is walking through the halls or stopping by her office on the second floor, she says: “Feel free to say hi to me.”
