Morning Madness: How to have a good morning

It’s early in the morning and the first thing you hear is the high pitched ringing of the alarm clock blaring in your ears. You roll out of bed, and an unpleasant gust of cold air fills the room. As you manage to finally drag your feet across the floor, you come to the disappointing realization that today is Monday. At least five days a week, we all go through this tiresome routine. How can this morning madness stop?

“I usually sleep at random times depending on how much homework I have or the time I get home. Sometimes I’ll sleep at 10:30 and other times nearly 1:00. I wake up at 6:00 every morning and I’m always extremely tired. I don’t eat breakfast but I always drink tea every morning,” says freshman, Sydney Sommer. Your mornings may not sound exactly like this. However, everyone has their own morning struggles that need help solving.

Here are 4 good tips to help you wake up to a good morning:

 1. Create a routine:

-We’ve all been told that an average person should have at least seven to eight hours of sleep. However, it’s actually more important to sleep and wake up at the same time everyday. Since we are all different, for some people, eight hours of sleep is unnecessary.

Instead, create a daily routine in which you sleep and wake up at the same time. Include some exercises in your daily routine to keep your heart pumping and healthy.

Follow a routine every time before bed and when you wake up in the morning. For example, before bed, wash your face, brush your teeth, stretch, and then go to sleep. When you wake up, do some yoga, wash your face, get dressed, eat breakfast, and prepare for another day. Of course, your personal routine may be different. But routines help your brain know when it’s time to sleep and wake up.

2. Keep hydrated:

Although we’ve heard that breakfast is very important, it’s even more important to keep hydrated. Your body needs more water than food.

However, that doesn’t mean that you should skip eating breakfast. Your body still needs the nutrition you eat to start the day. But because keeping hydrated is very important, drink a glass of water every night before bed and first thing after you wake up in the morning.

3. Meditate/Calm down:

The best way to wake up peacefully in the morning, is to sleep peacefully the night before. Therefore, before you go to bed, calm down and let your body know that it’s time to sleep. Avoid eating sweets, filling foods, or drinking coffee. Also stay far away from electronics. When you lay down in bed, remove all negative thoughts and clear your mind.

4. Stay positive:

When you wake up in the morning, avoid having a negative attitude.

It’s hard to have a good day when your mind only focuses on how tired and grumpy you are. Remember to always stay positive, by creating happy thoughts no matter how tired you are. Every morning when waking up, remind yourself that you have a reason to be happy because you are still alive.

However, sometimes having a routine or sleeping early doesn’t necessarily mean that you will have a good morning. Sometimes no matter what you do, you’ll always feel tired in the morning.

“I usually sleep around 10:00pm and wake up at 5:50am every school day. I always eat breakfast and I have a morning routine, but I’m still always tired in the morning”, says 9th grader, Carly Fisher.

If so, the only thing left to do is to stay positive. No matter how tired or groggy you get in the morning, always think of a reason why you should be happy instead. The real cure to stopping this morning madness is happiness.
