On Saturday, November 19, 2016, at Picnic Island Park, runners and volunteers headed out to support this cause and for Academy girls, also support their sisters. In total, Cross Out Cancer raised $65,818.36 to benefit the cancer families around Tampa, surpassing their goal of $50,000.

For the second year in a row, the Cross Out Cancer 5k successfully brought together hundreds of people to reach a common goal of finally “crossing out” cancer. Senior Lizzie Dolan created this event over two years ago to help raise money for cancer patients and their families at All Children’s Hospital who are struggling with the demands of this illness. Dolan’s cross country teammates and friends, Lindsay Calka and Greta Dieck, worked beside her to put on the annual 5k that takes over a year to plan. Dolan also brought together many other cross country teams from local high schools to help orchestrate the event and unite the schools as a community.
