Unique Dog Diets of AHN

February 26, 2018

Diets higher in protein and lower in processed grains will result in more energy for a dog, but Audrey Diaz’s (’18) dog, Remi, enjoys a Sprinkles cupcake on occasion. Photo Credit: Audrey Diaz/ Achona Online

Just like humans, dogs need to have a diet that will allow them to be active throughout the day and maintain a normal weight. It also has to be appetizing or they will not eat it and will get hungry.

Nowadays, commercial dog food contains ingredients that can cause major health problems such as kidney failure.

It is a common misconception that feeding a dog human food is bad for them; it is actually good depending on what they are fed. Some odd types of food that dogs are allowed to eat include:

Eggs

Eggs are a great food to feed a dog because they are high in protein and vitamin B.

Samantha Lleras (‘19) says, “Every Sunday, my family gives my dog an egg because it is a healthy treat.

Peanut Butter

Peanut butter is found in some types of dog food because it is a good source of protein. Be careful and make sure the peanut butter does not include xylitol, which is a harmful ingredient to dogs.

Xanax

Xanax can be useful to dogs who are anxious and suffer from panic disorders.

Ashley Mackinnon (‘20) says, “I have to feed my dog calming dog food, and whenever we go out of town we have to give her a xanax so she doesn’t get anxious.”

Rice

Rice is a good source of energy for dogs because there are no harmful fats, cholesterol or sodium. Cook the rice and let it cool before serving.

There are also several different types of food that a dog should not be given, such as:

Coconut

Coconut oil, milk, and water is bad for dogs because it upsets their stomach causing diarrhea.

Avocado

Avocados can cause vomiting in a dog because they contain persin, something found in leaves, bark, and fruit. The seed can also get stuck in a dog’s intestines and that can be fatal.

Alcohol

Alcohol affects a dog’s liver and brain the same way it does to humans. Even small amounts of alcohol can cause vomiting, diarrhea, coordination problems, breathing problems, coma, and death.

Grapes and Raisins

Many people think it is a good idea to give your dog a grape or raisin as a treat, but they can cause kidney failure in dogs. It will also make your dog sluggish and depressed.
