Avoiding Excess Consumerism this Holiday Season

Approaching the peak of the holiday season, it is easy to fall into the trap of consumerism. Whether from the stress of gift-giving, the need to have the best Christmas decor, or even the fancy new drink at Starbucks, it can be easy to let the spirit of materialism become overbearing and infringe on Christmas cheer. Still, there are plenty of ways to avoid this excess purchasing while enjoying the holiday season to its fullest potential.

Ask for Practical Gifts

When making a Christmas wishlist, keep it minimal and useful. Ask for that new pair of tennis shoes or a couple of basic pieces that will add value to a timeless wardrobe. Avoid falling into the trends that will expire in a year, and instead focus on gifts that will bring enjoyment and get a lot of use.

Prioritize Heartfelt over Expensive

Gift-giving is hard, and it can be easy to buy something expensive that the recipient may not even enjoy. However, this Christmas, try to make some gifts, such as a cute gift box or a photo album, for loved ones. Gather an array of heartfelt yet inexpensive mementos to spread love and Christmas cheer. Gift recipients will appreciate this caring gesture far more, and this is a great way to save some money.

Even better, gift close friends or family a memorable experience. While this may not be the best way to save money, experiences, such as a trip, concert, or museum visit, can bring people together in a special way and help build some amazing memories.

Upcycle Christmas Decor

Christmas decorations are a wonderful way to ring in the holiday season, but there is certainly not a need for new ones each year. Reuse Christmas decorations from previous years or spend some time with family making homemade decorations, such as these Christmas trees made from books and these mason jar centerpieces. Better yet, consider upcycling old, broken decorations.

Give Back

Rather than focusing on possessions and consumerism this holiday season, use the extra time to donate old clothes or food. Consider volunteering at a food pantry such as Feeding Tampa Bay or Trinity Cafe. These experiences will be far more fulfilling than any gift.

All these tips are sure to help embrace the true spirit of Christmas without falling into consumerism.
