Hockey season is in full swing, and the Tampa Bay Lightning are set to take on the Carolina Hurricanes, Panthers, and Predators. As fans pour into Amalie Arena, the anticipation for this season is here. The Lightning are known for their electric style in play, and they are eager to show their comeback this season after many years of getting cut short.

Coming off a season of the Lightning falling short of their championship aspirations, Tampa Bay is looking to establish itself as a dominant force in the National Hockey League (NHL). The change of captains after Stamkos’s trade, leaves Hedman with control of the team, determining if his leadership will shine through this upcoming season.

“Obviously, I know that there is a lot more responsibility to wearing that ‘C,’ but to do it for a team that I’ve played with for 15 years just means the world to me,” said Victor Hedman

Some star players include the captain Victor Hedman, a defenseman, who has been on the team since 2009 and is proving himself to take charge of the Lightning this year. “Victor is a cornerstone player that is extremely well respected by his teammates, coaches, and peers across the NHL,” said a press release by the  Tampa Bay Lightning

The alternate captains include Nikita Kucherov, a right-winger, who has been on the team since 2011, and Ryan McDonagh a defenseman, who has been on the Lightning since 2017.

As the season progresses, Academy girls are going to the games with their friends and using it as another fun activity in Tampa. Throughout the season some families host watch parties with friends, making hockey a fun and entertaining activity.

“The lightning games are such a fun thing with my friends and family,” said Rory Martin (‘26).

The Lightning’s success over the years, including back-to-back Stanley Cup victories in 2020 and 2021, created a strong fan base for the Tampa area.

“In 2021, the Bolts earned the coveted title of “back-to-back” Stanley Cup Champions, with a championship won in five games against the Montreal Canadiens,” said Alfred Ezman.

As the Lightning continue their season, the journey will be closely followed by fans who expect another playoff run. With Hedman’s leadership, there is hope that Tampa Bay will once again become a Stanley Cup contender.

“I love the Lightning so much and look forward to seeing them play this year,” said Mischa Martin (‘26).
