In regards to her work, she writes, “Uncertainty, pain, and frustration. Those words perfectly describe my three long battle with gastrointestinal issues and are conveyed within this work. This piece is a graphite pencil drawing of a still-life display of various medications tied into treating varied illnesses or treatments related to the stomach. The medication bottles and individual pills are arranged in a manner that is appealing to the eye and aids in the work’s overall message. When fighting illnesses tied to complex systems within the body, it can be quite challenging to pinpoint the “problem area,” properly diagnose, and prescribe the best treatment option. Let’s Try This Instead tells the story of my struggles and the hundreds of medications I have been prescribed. The bolded red x’s cross out the prescriptions, which worsened my symptoms or did not work for me. This graphite still life showcases just one aspect of combating stomach-related issues: medication-based treatments are only one part of it. Overall, my piece conveys the hardships of battling digestive problems and the guessing game that comes when finding the ‘right cocktail.'”
