Independence

This piece was submitted by Amanda Moroney (’23).

In regards to her work, she writes, “The piece, ‘Independence,’ is created using acrylic paint and I chose to use grapefruits because they are a symbol of self-sufficiency and self-determination. This spoke to me because I will soon be arranging college applications and planning for my future and I must learn to become independent which will set me up for success when growing up. Because of the vivid colors throughout, this painting communicates a positive tone which helps to express a future full of light and happiness. The rough-looking texture of the grapefruits illustrates little bumps in your life that will help you to grow and learn which will guide you with future experiences. The immense amount of layering and dark and light values with using only different shades of red with black, white and the complimentary color in the different grapefruit sections shows that there will be many obstacles in life, big or small, but if you choose to be confident and persevere there will always be light at the end of the tunnel.”
