The Blue Gardenia

This piece was submitted by Jaime Potter (’22).

In regards to her work, she writes, “This painting is called the ‘The Blue Gardenia’ and it is a blue monochromatic acrylic painting. The main focus of this painting was the big main gardenia in the middle of the painting. Since the focus is the lighter valued front flower, the background values are much darker. The texture of the flower is conveyed through the creases/lines in the petals. The size of the main flower is so large that it leaves little room for negative space. Due to the image being zoomed in take of a gardenia there are a lot of overlapping forms. My expressive intent was to show all the different values of blue. I did this by only using the color blue and mixing it with black and white to make lighter and darker values.”
