Jaguarettes dominate at Fabulous 50s Open Championships

Jaguarettes, Academy’s premiere dance team, swept first places this past weekend in Pom, Jazz and Varsity Open at the Fabulous 50s Open Championships held at the  Lakeland Center on Sunday, February 5, and sponsored by Varsity’s Cheer Power and Power Dance.

The girls faced a difficult challenge, performing on a cheerleading spring floor rather than on a usual dance floor.  Despite this setback, the team still performed beautifully and flawlessly, capturing the championship titles in all three categories, as well as high point overall.

This competition included dance and cheer teams from high schools and all-star open gyms for cheer and dance squads from all over Florida, including Riverview, Jacksonville, and Orlando,  all competing in the three categories – Varsity Pom, Varsity Jazz, and Varsity Open, a combination of pom, jazz, and hip-hop.     Academy’s grand sweep in awards against top competition shows the hard work and talent of this team.

Senior Olivia Obergon said, “We dominated the competition and got first in everything.”

Coach Mrs. Stephanie Rotolo-Zummo beamed with pride, “They represented AHN to its highest, as the squad was approached by selected judges and complimented on their performances, technique, and style.”

Also, Senior Meaghan Wehle was named Best Athlete for Dance and Mr. McCarthy, father of sophomore Hannah McCarthy, won the title of “Cool Dad” for all his cheering and support.

Senior captain Meaghan Wehle said, “It was a fantastic way to end the weekend.  I am so proud of the team.”

The team enjoys much needed relaxation for the upcoming month until their final competition, the Plant Showcase at Plant High School on April 13.
