Sports have always been a big part of the community of Tampa Bay and each family has a different team they support. Whether it’s football, hockey, or baseball, the city’s teams bring excitement, energy, and tradition to the community. From the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to The Tampa Bay Lightning ending off with The Tampa Bay Rays, each team stands out in its own way, beloved by people all over, showing meaning for all fans.
When Academy girls were asked about their favorite teams, the Tampa Bay Lightning dominated with over 45 votes out of the girls I asked. It is no surprise that the Bolts have built such a huge reputation as they are one of the most thrilling teams to watch. The games are fast paced, intense, and full of energy at all points of the games.

“My dad got us tickets when I was younger and it was the only thing I would sit down and watch without running around so he knew I would end up loving the game and we have gone ever since,” said Mischa Martin (’26).
Although the votes are held highly on the ice, the Buccaneers also hold a huge piece of the hearts of the families in Tampa. Football is more than just a sport, it’s a tradition that ties people and families together. For some people, being a Bucs fan is about the touchdowns and for others it’s about being together and getting to celebrate an event that comes around yearly.
“The Bucs have my every vote, my family and I attend every home game because we have season tickets, it’s always been a family tradition that I look forward to every year,” said Josie O’Brien (‘26).
The Rays bring out also bring sense of tradition, even though the votes aren’t as high, the home runs always are. Many students grew up watching the Rays as it is a long standing tradition in many families across Tampa Bay. The Rays are about more than stealing and grand slams, it’s about the thrill of the game and bonding with loved ones.

Many girls and their families have had seasons tickets since they were little, going to each and every game, every season. Many girls wear the same hat to each Rays game and wear the same socks to every Bolts game. Some of them have gone to a game every year on their birthday, or every year on the second Saturday of the month. Every family has their own tradition, some go just for the fun of the game.
“I love the Rays because it’s been a family tradition for so long that I watch the games with my dad,” said Hindley Hickinbotham (‘26).
