Blessed Marie Rose Durocher founded the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary in 1843.

Every year at Academy, the students celebrate the feast day of Blessed Marie Rose Durocher, the foundress of the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary. As a school community, Academy comes together for a mass in her honor. However, this year the school is celebrating in a different way, Rose Week.

During Rose Week, there will be a different activity every day to honor the Academy’s foundress. It is a way for everyone in the high school to come together to celebrate Blessed Marie Rose Durocher.

Many students are excited to celebrate this new tradition.

Religion teacher Kimberly Wiley says, “Sister Ann Reagan received an email last year from the Ramona Convent describing the way they celebrated Blessed Marie Rose Durocher. Ms. Dubee and I decided to bring the celebration to Academy. It is a unique way to celebrate the foundress of our school and we hope to continue this tradition moving forward.”

On Monday, Oct. 1, 2018, there was a convocation discussing the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary Youth Justice Forum. Students learned more about the forum that three Academy students attended over the summer. This convocation helped teach students about the three pledges of the Sisters of the Holy Names.

On Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2018, the Sisters joined the Academy students in the Brady Center to enjoy lunch together.

The annual Spike and Splash will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2018. This year instead of just supporting breast cancer, the event will also be supporting pediatric cancer in honor of Cailin Cannella.

Summer Wolf (‘19) says, “I have been attending Spike and Splash since I first started at Academy in kindergarten. It is a great way to support people with cancer and also have fun.”

On Thursday during lunch, there will be student versus faculty four square games. This event started last year and is popular among Academy students.

Finally on Friday, Academy will celebrate mass in honor of their foundress. There will also be Reconciliation from 12:00 p.m to 2:00 p.m. in the chapel for any student that would like to participate.

This year, there will also be a backpack drive for migrant workers. In every theology class, students will be bringing in donations that will eventually be brought to the migrant children in our community. There will also be trivia via Achona’s Instagram account throughout the entire week.

Maddie Chandler (‘19) says, “I am very excited for Rose Week. I want to learn more about our history and Blessed Marie Rose. I think it is a great way for everyone to come together and celebrate.”
