A new lunch schedule: How do Academy girls feel about it?

This year there’s a new change to the schedule. Instead of one lunch, there’s two. This change wasn’t the easiest for all grade levels to adjust to, but there has been much positive feedback from students.

After analyzing the schedule, Principal Jeane McNamara explains that adding two lunches would be the best decision for all students and their schedules. Because of this change, it has allowed there to be more advisory time which has been beneficial for students. This also allowed class Mass to return which is great for every grade.

“The two major changes for the high school are one, we’ve added a second lunch which is something that – just because of our size, we probably should’ve investigated this a long time ago – it’s made the lunch service much smoother and civilized. The other thing is the community time and having our advisory on the same schedule as the eight day cycle has made a huge difference,” said McNamara.

McNamara also explains how she’s had some students tell her about how much more they’re able to get done with community time being more predictable.

The change came as a shock for most students at Academy, but they all adapted quickly. Everyone had to make sure they were going to the right lunch, and there was a worry if you don’t know anyone in that lunch, but it turns out the girls found it wasn’t all that bad.

Junior Jia Bryant said, “I think it was definitely hard to adjust, especially to not have all your friends at lunch, but it has its ups and downs for sure.”

After some time went by and everyone adjusted to this change, students found it actually helped the lunch line go by a lot faster.

“I like how the Sage line moves a lot quicker,” said Faith DeRing (‘27).

Although this isn’t much of a change for the freshmen, it was still a bit nerve-racking for them. Paris Land (‘29) confirms this when she said, “I like the two different lunches so the cafeteria isn’t as crowded. I was a little nervous about it at first, but after the first week it was good.”

As with any change, people are apprehensive and might not like it at first, especially for the Seniors who have one year left and don’t want change.

Senior Mia DeBourg said, “I think that at the beginning it was difficult to adjust because I was worried I wouldn’t have any lunches with my friends, but then I noticed it was sort of a blessing in disguise because the “slounge” is small anyways, and I’ve gotten to make new friends with so many people.”
