Yoga on the Lawn is an annual event hosted by P.O.W.E.R., a school club that is dedicated to promote education and respect within the AHN community. The event looks to raise awareness for the Missing and Murdered Indigenous People (MMIP) Crisis, which is an issue that affects countless families across the country.

At first, it seems like a relaxing yoga session in front of the beautiful bay. Students arrive in comfortable clothes and are ready to decompress after a long week. After the yoga session, participants are invited to indulge in donuts and hot cocoa. However, beneath the calm setting lies a much deeper purpose.

The MMIP crisis refers to the high rates of violence, which includes murder, trafficking, and abduction that are targeted towards Indigenous people in the United States—especially women and young girls. Many cases go unresolved or unreported, and families are often left in the dark, without answers or justice. Yoga on the Lawn seeks to shed light on this issue, and it reminds students that education is one of the first steps for change, especially with issues as complex as the MMIP crisis.

In past years, Yoga on the Lawn has attracted students from across grade levels. P.O.W.E.R. looks to expand the event’s reach in the future, with possible future additions including: hosting bake sales to raise awareness for advocacy groups, guest speakers, and showcasing AP Capstone student research projects related to the crisis.

By combining mindfulness with education, Yoga on the Lawn provides a way to connect students’ well being with social awareness. It encourages participants to take a pause in their busy lives, breathe, and remember that change can begin even in the simplest ways.

Participate in Yoga on the Lawn, which will be held before school on Wednesday October 29, 2025.  For additional information regarding the event, refer to the flyer provided by P.O.W.E.R:
