Fish Fish Everywhere!

For the first time in school history, Academy girls attended a field trip in the middle of the fourth quarter. Marine Biology and Environmental classes headed to the Tampa Aquarium on Friday, April 20, guided by their teachers Mr. Paul Sloshberg and Mrs. Judy Perella.  Guidance Counselor Mrs. Darcy Dwyer served as chaperone and official photographer, who captured some memorable shots of the trip. Parent Ms. Caroline Allen and Sister Mary Patricia Plumb SNJM rounded out the chaperone list.

Both classes enjoyed a behind-the-scenes tour of the Aquarium. Students worked on an assignment that required them to visit the entire aquarium, taking pictures of the animals and vegetation that related to topics they had focused on in class.

The students enjoyed the Wild Dolphin Cruise, an experience with the dolphins of the Tampa Bay area, which is home to over 500 bottlenose dolphins. The 90-minute encounter was onboard the Bay Spirit II, the brand new ship that towers over the water at 72-feet, allowing the girls to have the best encounter with these gentle animals.

The girls were able to eat in the cafeteria before they headed to their “Behind the Scenes” tours. The tour took the girls around to view one of the large shark tanks. The girls also were able to view a shallow tank, the food preparation area, and a coral reef area.

Senior Mary Katherine Szikszay said, “I am so glad I got to go on this trip. I loved the dolphin encounter! So cool! One of the highlights was the tour when we learned about the food preparation.”

The aquarium staff was very accommodating to the Marine and Environmental girls, who participated and claimed that the enviro field trip is definitely going to be a trip that all the seniors will be looking forward to next year.
