Twitter…check! Facebook…check!  YouTube…check! Storify…awesome! Pinterest…perhaps!  Tumblr…could work! UStream… maybe not quite yet?

Faced with multiple social networking sites that make up “new journalism,” Achona Co-Editors Tori Litschgi and Li Stalder are ready to take on new challenges this year.  Both editors attended a three-day high school workshop at the Poynter Institute on August 8-10 with Achona Adviser and Honors Journalism Teacher Mrs. Edie LeBas.

Funded by a grant from the Gannet Foundation and WTSP-TV, the workshop included presentations by Poynter faculty, including Seminar Director Wendy Wallace, Digital Trends and Social Media expert Ellyn Angelotti,  Dean of the Faculty Stephen Buckley, Senior Scholar Roy Peter Clark, Senior Faculty Kelly McBride, and Interactive Learning Producer Vidisha Priyanka.

Theresa Collington, Director of Digital Content and Operations for  Channel 10 News,  provided an overview of audio and video basics for the web. Taylor Katz, Datasphere Producer for WTSP, included information about blogging and tracking data.

Also selected for the workshop were editors and advisers from high schools with online newspapers from Pinellas County (Dixie Hollins, Lakewood, Largo and Palm Harbor) and from Hillsborough County (Bloomingdale, Robinson and Hillsborough).  Participants will now become part of the Poynter Institute Alumni.
