Movie on the Lawn raises $2400 for Senior Endowment

Even the cold weather on Sunday, December 5, could not keep people away from the 2011 Senior Class showing of Home Alone on the soccer fields at the Academy.  Headed by Senior Class President Meredith Zingale and her four Vice Presidents – Paige Schaefer, Mackenzie Murphy, Paige Russell, and Francesca Stafetti, Movie on the Lawn raised $2400 towards the Class of 2011 Senior Endowment fund.

By utilizing fun activities to draw the younger crowds like face painting and balloon animals, Movie on the Lawn was able to incorporate all grade levels while providing support for the Academy community and spreading holiday cheer.

The evening began early for senior helpers who arrived at 4:30 to begin setup for the event. Each senior provided delicious baked goods and treats to sell. Gates opened at 5:30 for guests as many families came early to take advantage of fun activities like face painting and balloon animals. Caitlin Vaka, the face painting extraordinaire, showed off her artistic talents under the new Dads Club Pavilion. Lindsey Hahn joined Caitlin showcasing her impressive balloon animal making skills. Together, the duo entertained crowds before the movie began.

Caitlin shared her enthusiasm about the experience:  “It was great to be able to have all Academy students join in on the fun.”

The movie started promptly at six following a brief speech made by Meredith. Home Alone entertained the crowd by showing the silly antics of Kevin McCallister, a boy accidentally left home on Christmas, and his efforts to protect his house from not-so-bright intruders. The movie had the crowd – parents and children alike – howling with laughter while bundled up with blankets and hot chocolate. For those who braved the chilly weather, Movie on the Lawn provided opportunities to take time for fun with family, friends, and other Academy students.

Movie on the Lawn would not have been a success without the many supporters and special help of those involved. Meredith and her team of vice presidents sat through countless meetings with Mr. Mullarkey and Mrs. Jowanna preparing for the big day. Together, they were able to come up with fun ideas to make Movie on the Lawn even more enjoyable.

Mrs. Patty Bohannan, Alumni Director,  and Skip Livingston of Buildings and Grounds were instrumental to the success of the evening. As Paige Schaefer noted, “I’m glad so many people came out. But I think the participation of the senior class was the most exciting.”

For those who know the Senior class, they like to do things big, and the Movie on the Lawn was no exception.
