AHN wins District Softball Champs – first since 2007

On Thursday, April 21, for the first time since 2007, Academy softball girls won the 3A-District -10 Championship with a 7 to 2 victory over their arch-nemesis Tampa Catholic.

In the District title game, AHN led 2-0 in the bottom of the first inning with runs from junior first-baseman Jackie Moreda and pitcher Sidney Brown. Tampa Catholic tied the game in the fourth, but Academy girls forged ahead in the fifth with five runs. Brown pitched a complete game with 11 strikeouts, while allowing four hits.

“It was just focus,” Moreda said. “We had a lot more confidence against Tampa Catholic this year. “

The Jaguars finished a strong season (13-7) as the top seed in District 2A.  In semi-finals at Bradenton, attempting another no-hitter with Berkeley in the regular season, Sidney Brown came close, giving up only one run and striking out 16 out of 22 hitters.

In a TBO Online feature on April 20, Brown said,  ” I was just paying attention to the score. The goal is to win districts and get to states.”
