AHN swim team captures Region 3 title for third year in a row

On Saturday, November 3, at the North Shore complex in St. Petersburg,  the AHN swim team dominated the Region 3 meet.  The Jaguars took this victory easily, winning by over 100 points over the runner-up team.  After receiving their victory trophies, the AHN and JHS swim teams both excitedly jumped into the pool, taking their coaches in with them.

Junior Clare Fleming took down the school record in the 50 yard freestyle, placing second overall.  Sophomore Alex Nuyianes also broke a school record in the 200 yard individual medley.  Junior Shae Timmons also broke the record time, but Nuyianes out touched Timmons at finals.  The teammates placed second and third, respectively.  Alex is so excited about finally breaking the record she has had her eyes on for over a year.

“At first I couldn’t believe it, but after it really hit me, I was really excited.  All the hard work I have put in is finally starting to show.”

Junior Margret Shumake placed first in the 100 yard breastroke, outtouching teammate Timmons by one one-thousandth of a second in a nail-bitingly close race.  AHN’s 200 yard freestyle and 400 yard freestyle relays dominated the pool, claiming championship titles in both races, finishing more than a body length ahead of the rest of the competition.

Eleven girls individually qualified for the State 2A, but thirteen girls will be traveling to the Orlando YMCA this Thursday, November 8,  to compete.  The Jaguars have their eyes set on the runner-up trophy and will swim their bests in order to accomplish this goal.

Senior Emily Pollock positively recounts the meet.

“Everyone swam really well and contributed many points to our team’s victory.  Regions is an exciting meet because we are all always cheering for the relays and each individual.  My favorite part is when our team jumps into the pool with our trophy.  It is one of the memories I will miss the most next year.”
