As spring training concludes, the Tampa Bay Rays will be playing in Steinbrenner Field for the first time due to the extensive damage to Tropicana Field. In October of 2024, Hurricane Milton devastated many buildings in the Tampa Bay Area, including Tropicana Field, which lost part of its roof during the storm.

Due to safety concerns and being unable to repair the roof in time, the Rays decided to relocate to the Steinbrenner Field after being welcomed by the Yankees. Although the Rays expressed their gratitude for being able to share Steinbrenner Field with the Yankees, playing in a new location will be a big adjustment for the players and fans.
Many AHN fans who have been attending Rays games at the Tropicana Field since they were little are particularly saddened.
Senior Sara Klimek said, “Ever since I was young, my parents have been taking me to Rays baseball games at the Tropicana Field. The stadium has held so many fun memories for me, and it is really devastating to see what has happened to it. I’m hoping that it can be repaired in the future so that the Rays legacy will live on.”
Having practice and games on Steinbrenner Field will present a variety of challenges for the Rays and their fans. Because Steinbrenner Field is outside and can seat fewer fans, attendance and scheduling could be a potential concern. Warm temperatures may deter fans who worry about being too uncomfortable from attending games. Summer thunderstorms are also likely to interfere with practice and cause games to be canceled. Depending on how warm it is, the players may lose stamina quicker both when they practice and play against other teams. The minor league New York Yankees team usually practices on Steinbrenner Field, so the Rays will have to share the space.

On the positive note, Steinbrenner Field is located in Hillsborough County, which is a much closer location to many Rays fans. Steinbrenner Field’s close location may encourage more fans to attend games.
The dimensions of Steinbrenner Field are potentially beneficial for the offensive moves during games. Since the Rays tend to make more offensive moves during games, the dimensions may help them score more home runs. Additionally, the Yankees recently renovated the venue, making the experience at the facility for players and fans much more enjoyable.
Considering the adjustment the Rays will have to make to playing in the Steinbrenner Field, it is still undetermined how well they will perform. Either way, it is important for the players and fans to keep their spirits high as they navigate the new changes this season.
Avery Maxwell (‘27) said, “It’s always fun to watch sports teams with friends and family and wherever they play, I’m happy to be cheering on my home team – Go Rays.”
