Despite the recent hurricane, Spike & Splash, the Academy of the Holy Names’ annual fundraising event, will still take place on Wednesday, October 2 at 5:30 after school. Admission is free for everyone, and refunds will be provided for those who have already purchased tickets. The event features volleyball matches and a swim meet, bringing the school community together to support breast cancer and pediatric cancer research. The evening will include the Junior Varsity and Varsity volleyball teams competing against Carrollwood Day School and the Academy’s Swimming & Diving team facing Plant High School. The Dads Club will provide food, which will be available for purchase at the event. $3,300 has already been raised through T-shirt sales, and these funds will be donated to the National Pediatric Cancer Foundation and Moffitt Cancer Center.
Spike & Splash is more than just an evening of competition—it’s a night deeply rooted in tradition, community support, and philanthropy. The event began as a tribute to the Academy of the Holy Names’ former head swimming coach, Mara Schultz, who courageously battled breast cancer. Over the years, the mission of Spike & Splash has expanded to include raising funds and awareness for pediatric cancer, inspired by the bravery of AHN’s student-athlete, Cailin Cannella, whose fight against osteosarcoma touched the hearts of many. Spike and Splash now honors the memory of both Mara and Cailin and serves as a testament to the Academy’s commitment to supporting cancer research and patient care.
With the entire community rallying behind the cause, the atmosphere of Spike & Splash has always been electric as athletes take to the pool and volleyball court to showcase their skills. Last year’s event raised over $8,000 through ticket sales, t-shirt purchases, and food sales—all of which went to Moffitt Cancer Center and the National Pediatric Cancer Foundation. As we celebrate the 16th anniversary of Spike & Splash this year, we reflect on the nearly $100,000 raised over the years to support cancer research. The event’s evolution from honoring Coach Schultz’s fight against breast cancer to embracing a broader mission reflects the strength and generosity of the AHN community.
