The Academy of the Holy Names hosted its annual Spike & Splash fundraiser on Wednesday, October 2, 2024. The event brought the AHN community together for a night of competition and support for cancer research.

The Varsity Girls’ Volleyball team played a tough match against Carrollwood Day School, losing 1-3, but they showed great determination and sportsmanship throughout the game. Meanwhile, the swimming and diving team had a strong performance, beating Plant High School in a series of exciting races.

This year’s Spike & Splash raised $4,413, pushing the event’s all-time total to over $115,000. Proceeds will go to the National Pediatric Cancer Foundation and the Moffitt Cancer Center. The AHN Dads Club also contributed by selling food and drinks, adding to the fundraising total.

Lanna Oates, a senior on the volleyball team, shared her thoughts on the event, saying, “It’s exciting but also sad knowing this was my last time playing in such a special event. Being part of a night that brings the AHN community together for such an important cause means so much to me.”

Spike & Splash started in honor of former AHN swim coach Mara Schultz, who battled breast cancer. It now also honors former student-athlete Cailin Cannella, who fought osteosarcoma. Over the past 16 years, the event has grown into a night of celebration and community support for cancer research.

As Spike & Splash continues to raise awareness and funds, the AHN community looks forward to making next year’s event even more successful.
