Virtual visit inspires living green

In a virtual visit with author Ashley Adams English, Academy students had a chance to chat with a working author and sister of AHN history teacher Devon Adams.

Academy students were able to Skype with English on Tuesday, March 26 in the Board Room. English resides in Candler, North Carolina, with her husband, young son and a menagerie of animals. She has published five books on homesteading and green living, including keeping bees, chickens, and home dairy. English has also published in Food and Wine and has been a repeat guest on Martha Stewart Radio.

She has a great blog dedicated to enlightening readers on making environmentally sensible life choices. From simple, daily gestures geared towards helping families, communities, and the planet.

Emily Wise, Director of Public Relations and Communications, enjoyed the virtual visit. “I could have listened to her all day.”

Emily Swiger, Director of Media Services/Children’s Librarian, also applauded English’s use of media.”She was very personable and generous with her time. She also spoke a lot about using diverse media outlets.”

English is now working on her current project Sowing the Seeds. She grows seeds inside her home by constructing a garden in her sunny upstairs bathroom. She received the seeds from a non-profit organization,Sow the seed, which helps provide shelter, food, education, clothing and medical needs to various needy children, women, and men from a destitute background in India.

This spring, take the initiative and start your own garden, as a great way to brighten up your space and help the environment.
