How to: Occupy your Time on a Road Trip

Car rides are a great time to watch the sun set!

Going on a road trip and have no clue what to do to occupy the time sitting idly in the car? Here is a list of eight different activities perfect for any car ride, long or short.

1. Color

Regardless of your age, coloring is always a fun way to pass the time. Adult coloring books have also become the latest and greatest fad. Buzzfeed has created a list of 16 adult coloring books.

2. Listen to Music

Jamming out is a good way to get pumped up before reaching your final destination. Play your own favorite songs or listen to this playlist with some songs that are perfect to jam out to on your road trip! 

3. Watch Movies

To keep the car ride fun and not dull, watch movies. Comedies and romance movies keep the car ride happy and relaxing. Freshmen Meredith Hemmings and Taylor Scott both say their favorite thing to do on a road trip is to watch movies to pass the time on the road. Here are some of the best time passing movies for you trip.

4. Play I Spy

Popular among younger kids, playing “I Spy” can help to involve the whole car in something rather than just one person like reading or listening to music. I Spy can also help to acquaint you with your new surroundings.

5. Sleep

If you need to catch up on sleep, a long car ride is prime time to do just that. Taking a nap will provide the energy needed to make it through the rest of the day once you’ve reached your destination.

6. Read

If reading is an activity you enjoy, bring a book for your car ride. Senior, Isabella Alfonso, says “I wish I could bring my books on road trips because there is so much free time, but I get car sick when I read in the car.” If you aren’t currently reading a book and are searching for one to read, check out this list of the 100 best ever teen novels.

7. Word Games (i.e. crossword puzzles, word searches, mad libs)

Crossword puzzles, word searches, mad libs, and other word games prove the perfect change of pace for any car ride. They can be done solo or with the whole car.

8. Homework

Though doing homework is something everyone hates, a long car ride is the perfect time to do work. No one likes to spend their free time doing their homework, so it might as well be done when you are forced to be in the car for an extensive period of time. Doing your homework will also help you in the long run.
