A person’s zodiac sign can say everything about someone’s character from what they like and dislike to all their inner thoughts. But how accurate are they? Astrology, the study of the correlation between celestial bodies and earthly events that involve a person’s birthday, is said to be the reason humans act the way they do. Some people’s birthdays fall on the borders or “cusps” of the date ranges, and it can affect their horoscopes. With twelve zodiac signs, Academy students and staff determine whether or not their zodiac sign gives reason to their personality.

Aquarius

January 20 – February 18

Strengths: Independent

Weakness: Unemotional

Summary: Aquarius are very set in their ways, but they are never quick to judge.  They are very witty and unique. People of the Amethyst, Hematite, Garnet, Amber birthstones are imaginative and are able to predict the future like no other. Aquarius are known to pick on anyone they find weak or dull-minded. It is easy for them to target the weak with verbal teasing. They mean no harm, but it could be taken the wrong way.  

Senior Danielle Gutierrez states  “I think that my strength is pretty on point, I like to think that I’m a pretty independent person. But as for weakness, I’m the total opposite, I put my emotions into a lot of my work and friendships so that’s not accurate for me. The summary has some true aspects, I like to do my own thing and not really follow crowds, and I am kind of idealistic about the future so that also applies to me.”

Pisces

February 19 – March 20

Strengths: Compassionate

Weakness: Oversensitive

Summary: Pisces are more intuitive and psychic than any other zodiac signs. They do not take rejection well and they treat others with respect.  They rarely say no to a person in fear of hurting their feelings. They experience extreme emotions, whether good or bad, with intensity. With relationships, they might be clingy and dependent but never overbearing. Pisces women are most likely to get lost in the romance.

Mrs. Dana Nazaretian, high school history and psychology teacher, gave her opinion on the whole science behind astrology and her zodiac sign.

She divulges, “I think it is all a bunch of baloney and you can quote me on that. Psychologists are totally against it and have an explanation as to why the whole thing is a lie.”

Nazaretian is a Pisces and after studying the characteristics it was apparent that she did not match up with her horoscope.

Aries

March 21 – April 19

Strengths: Optimistic

Weakness: Impulsive

Summary: Aries put a lot of pressure on themselves, thus resulting in self-doubt. However, their natural optimism and enthusiasm overtake their underlying insecurity.  Aries are known for having no filter and saying whatever pops into their head, usually regretting it later.  

Senior, Megan Przedpelski, admitted “It kind of is but I think I have a pretty good filter.”

In this case, not all of the Aries traits added up to those of Przedpelski’s. There are times where a person does not fully commit to one sign and finds a connection elsewhere.

Taurus

April 20 – May 20

Strength: Dependable and persistent

Weakness: Stubborn

Summary: Taurus are not fond of change. They need order in their lives and when they do not have it, they get very anxious. They tend to  take things very personally, and can be secretive, opinionated, and stingy.  Taurus are down to earth, and they do not like gaudy, flashy or over the top things.

Biology teacher and a man of little words, Paul Sloshberg, comments on his zodiac reading with “zodiac is a bunch of nonsense.”

Although he disagrees with horoscopes in general, Sloshberg completely connected with his astrological reading.

Gemini

May 21 – June 20

Strength: Witty

Weakness: Superficial and devious

Summary:  Geminis are known to be superficial, instead of looking deep into a person’s real qualities, they judge a person by the way they treat other people. Gemini’s are quick both in the mind and physically. Those who hold this sign are curious and always want to know what’s going on in the world around them. They are the ultimate social butterfly. They do not fully commit to a relationship right away in order to take their time figuring out if a guy is worth their time. Once someone has her approval, she can easily become jealous.

Senior, Karianne Buser states  “I relate to my zodiac so much”, while Faculty member, Mrs. Beth Chase “That’s not me at all, I am nice”.

Cancer

June 21 – July 22

Strength: Loyalty

Weakness: Self-pitying

Summary: They are complex, fragile, unpredictable and temperamental.  Cancers need constant support and encouragement, more than any other astrology sign. This is driven by their fear of trust, Cancer has a difficult time trusting people. They are very possessive, not just with material possessions but with people as well. Rarely tells people tells one if they are upset.

Ella Castellano shares, “It’s a little bit like me but not completely. I fall between Cancer and Leo.”

The AHN freshman, who has a birthday on July 19, which calls close to the end of Cancer and is considered to have a cusp on her zodiac signs. Castellano finds similarities in Cancers and Leos.

Leo

July 23 – August 22

Strength: Creative

Weakness: Bossy and nosey
Summary: Leos believe in Karma. They will do whatever it takes to protect their own reputation. Leos are very generous, kind, and openhearted people. If a Leo is crossed, they will strike back with force, but they are not one to hold a grudge. They want only the best which can cause lavish excessive spending habits. Public image is very important to Leos and they prefer to keep their image in high standing.

“I would say that was pretty accurate” states Junior, Tahlia Shariff, whose birthday falls on August 10.

Virgo

August 23 – September 22

Strength:Observant

Weakness:Skeptical  

Summary: Virgos are always paying attention to the smallest details and their deep sense of humanity makes them one of the most caring signs of the zodiac. Virgo has a constant drive to improve and perfect, which can lead to extreme selectiveness.  They are very methodical and good at jobs that require  organizational skills. If something is not working as it should, hire a Virgo. When they focus on some task, they will give their best to execute it

perfectly. They love books and art. Possible career options for a Virgo include doctor, nurse, psychologist, teacher, writer and critic.

Senior Liz Benjamin states “Sometimes I relate to the Virgos, but then sometimes all it says is like ‘you’re organized’ and i’m not really like that”

Sophomore, Maddie Urso, shares that “I pay attention to every detail, and I like art, but I’m horrible at it.”

Libra

September 23 – October 22

Strength: Diplomatic

Weakness: Superficial

Summary:  Libras are great at getting along with people, and  are all about partnerships and groups. They are the glue that holds a group together, because they are the ones responsible for keeping harmony and peace. Libras have mastered the art of relationships. They are able to put themselves in other’s shoes and see things through another person’s point of view. They are the ones that always want to make things right and have balance and harmony in their life, their surroundings, and the lives of others.  They are also likely to hide  their own true feelings in order to bring peace with a group. Sometime this results in them not really knowing what their true feelings are because they are trying to make everyone happy

With a birthday on October 16, Freshman Audrey Boos says “I am outgoing and love to make friends. [I am] Social butterfly.”

Out of all the zodiac signs, Libras make the best kind of friend. They are the life of the party and will cherish all those who they surround themselves with. They are friends with everyone but there are a few selected friends that Libras will consider to be their best friends.

Scorpio

October 23 – November 21

Strengths: Loyal

Weakness: Suspicious and jealous

Summary: Scorpios are very capable of hiding their true feelings and motivations. They often have ulterior motives or a hidden agenda. Scorpios are all about control,and to be out of control is very threatening. Scorpio’s emotions tend to be intensified. Negative emotions of jealousy and resentment are hallmarks of this turbulent astrology sign. Scorpios are very intuitive, but not as in a psychic sense, more as intuitive into the human mind, they have a great understanding of the mystery and the power of the human mind.

A person who wished to remain anonymous mentions, “That is totally me, but nothing to brag about and I want to keep a secret. I can’t have people knowing I’m a schemer.”

Say a prayer to whoever has a mother that is a Scorpio. With all that intuition and a sixth sense, there is no lying to her.

Sagittarius

November 22-December 21

Strengths: Independence

Weakness: Unemotional

Summary: Sagittarius are born entertainers and conversationalists. Others may be hurt by their lack of commitment, but they don’t care.Sagittarius tend to have a difficult completing long term projects since they wish for immediate results. Sagittarius are not emotional people, but they are easily hurt by a careless selfish action..

Freshman, Olivia Perez, who is a Sagittarius, relates to the summary of this sign, exclaiming“This is exactly me, that’s crazy.”

Capricorn

December 22 – January 19

Strength :Ambitious

Weakness: Conceited and Unimaginative

Summary: The most significant things to Capricorns are security, financial and material security. This is the driving force behind their ambitious character They are very concerned with their public standing and their prestige. Capricorns enjoy spending time away from the crowd, but they also need to feel appreciated; a truth they are excellent at hiding. . Capricorns make it difficult to get emotionally attached because emotional connection makes them feel vulnerable yet satisfied at the same time.

Junior, Alexa Traviesa, does not find a connection between her zodiac sign due to her cusp birthday of January 19.

“None of that sounded like me” stated Traviesa, who finds more in common with Aquarius.

Although some feel their zodiac signs match their personality well, many people can agree their signs do not comply to them. It appears, there were more people who identified with their astrological sign than those who do not. One should always get to know a person before assuming who they actually are due to their zodiac, although it can help in the process if one is trying to get an idea of a person.
