Academy girls place second at AHN Volleyball Invitational

The Varsity Volleyball team rallied aginst tough competition in their annual Invitational tournament on Friday, September 9, placing second behind formidable foe Tampa Catholic.  Winning two matches over  Sickles
(25-10; 25-19) and over Northside (25-19; 25-20), Academy girls gave TC a run for their money in the final match of the tournament (27-29;25-22).

The tournament provided a good look as to what the team will be able to accomplish this season with their starters Amanda McWilliams, Olivia Jones, Chandler Cartwright, and Jen Aprile. Senior Brynn Wiley is sitting out for now with a re-injured knee.

With a new coach and a few new players, the season could not have started off in a better way along with a pre-season  2-1 win-loss record at the Plant Power Pool tournament  last weekend and a strong win over Booker.

Head Coach, Jeff Davis, coaches with a purpose of mental focus and discipline. He stresses the need to be in position and states that, “If a player is almost in postition, but not quite there and the ball drops, then it was a point that was almost won.” He is excited to continue on in the season and hopes that the team will comptete at the same level of intensity they brought to the Plant Power Pool.

At the home tournament this past weekend, many fellow Jaguars came out and watched some of the new additions to Academy Volleyball. Freshmen, Mica Wiley, Becca Prossen, Bailey Boesch, and Courtney Vogler conquered their nerves and crushed the ball with the purpose to maintain their position on the Varsity team.
