Gasparilla is an annual Tampa Bay festival pirate festival, originating in 1904 to boost city pride. It celebrates the legend of José Gaspar, a fictitious Spanish pirate who ravaged West Florida in the late eighteenth century, featuring a mock invasion.
There are many ways to attend and celebrate the day of the parade. Some girls choose to experience Gasparilla right in the middle of all the action on Bayshore Boulevard. They wake up early, put on fun outfits, and meet friends to save a spot. Standing along the parade route is very loud, busy, and full of excitement. Everyone is thrilled to catch some beads and good vibes.
Megan Causey (26’) said, “This is my eighth year going to Gasparilla and every time I have celebrated it on Bayshore. I always have a blast with my friends and family. Unfortunately this year was bad weather conditions so being cold and wet cut my time short. However, I still had so much fun and I got lots of beads and pictures.”

Other girls prefer a calmer but still fun way to celebrate by hanging out at Tampa’s Yacht Club or a friend’s house near the water. From there, they can watch the boats drive by and enjoy the party at a comfortable spot. These girls spend the day taking pictures and eating good food.
Abby Smith (26’) said, “The yacht club was so much fun, it was my first time being invited and I would love to celebrate Gasparilla like that next year. I went with a big group of girls and we all sat around and talked to so many people.”
Academy girls even celebrate very lowkey and chill. They like to stay at their own house and watch TV. Even though they are not there in person, they still feel excitement. They watch all the decorated floats and crowds while sitting on their couch warm and cozy.
Annabelle Bennett (26’) said, “I unfortunately had appointments on Gasparilla day so I stayed home with my family but I wouldn’t have changed it. I watched my little nephew and played on the TV. I loved watching the floats go by and show my family which ones I love the most.”
