As Valentines day is approaching, it is important to remember the different ways to celebrate that do not include a significant other. Although it is a common misconception that it is a day to spend time with your boyfriend, it is really meant to honor relationships with our loved ones, whether that is with family, friends, or even yourself. Here is a list of activities to do with yourself or the people you love most in your life.
Talbot Garrity (’29) says, “Valentine’s Day is often associated with romantic partners, but for many people, it represents something much bigger. For me, it’s about the love you have for your people and for yourself.”
Plan a Galentine’s
An important tradition for many friend groups has been to host an annual Galentines with some of their closest friends. This requires finding a place to host the event, such as a park, a backyard, or even on a beach. A cute setting allows people to take cute pictures to post on social media with their pink and red Valentine’s themed outfits. People can bring food, drinks, and treats potluck style so that everyone can contribute. After activities like giving each other gifts, arts and crafts, or even card games can happen to make the night even more entertaining.

Have a self-care day
This time can be a great excuse to prioritize yourself and take a moment to relax and care for yourself. In the morning, you can try a new pilates studio or even go for a Bayshore walk. You could also try to make some chocolate covered strawberries to stay in the Valentine’s mood.
Later, enjoy a warm bubble bath with a face mask and then end the night with a classic romantic comedy such as “When Harry Met Sally” or “The Notebook”.
Garrity says, “For me self care is also a big thing, I have learned to love myself more and more everyday especially coming to Academy. Everyone is different in their own ways.”

Practice a new hobby
Take the time to try out something you have never done before. Maybe it’s something you have been putting off, like getting into a new book that you have heard is very interesting. It could also be something as simple as journaling, where you can write about anything you would like. You could also grab some friends and plan a mini pickleball tournament at any of the public courts.

Self love is ultimately the most important thing to prioritize during this Valentine’s season. Although it is meaningful to celebrate the people who support and shape you, it’s crucial to value yourself and not let others define your happiness.
