“Wicked: For Good” has been highly anticipated across the U.S since the first movie, “Wicked”, premiered on November 22, 2024. Since the release on November 21, 2025 the movie has been a national phenomenon. The movie was a hit in the box office racking in $223 million on opening weekend. Compared to its preceding movie, which made $164 million, “Wicked: For Good” seems to be a fan favorite across the globe.
This movie, a whopping two hours and 18 minutes, engaged viewers with vivid graphics and enthralling plots. The movie starts with a celebration for the supposed death of the “Wicked” Witch, played by Cynthia Erivo. This picks up right where the second movie left off, making it easy for viewers to figure out where the plot left off. The two movies were spaced around a year apart, but the lack of plot gaps made the movies blend together well.
“I really liked the movie,” says Jayce Insolia (‘27), “the wait was long but it was worth it.”
Something that added to the wonder of the movie was the catchy soundtrack. After the first “Wicked” debuting with Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo’s cover of “Popular”, and Erivo’s rendition of “Defying Gravity”, the second movie had quite the soundtrack to live up to. The movie pulled through with songs like “For Good” and “As Long As Your Mine”, entertaining viewers with beautiful voices and methodical lyrics. The music in both “Wicked” movies was highly anticipated because the movies were based off of the broadway musical “Wicked”. The Director of these films needed to choose strong vocals to support the technically advanced music in the movies.
“I think that “Wicked” is super awesome,” says Gigi Luka (‘27), “I have been a fan of “Wicked” since before the movie even came out because I like the play. I think the movie did a really good job of doing the musical justice and that it stayed true to the key concepts of the musical. I think that with musicals that become movies or like books that there’s a lot that’s lost and there’s a lot of disparities between the two. But, I think that “Wicked” stayed very accurate.”
Another key factor that added to the popularity of the movie was the well renowned cast. The two main characters, Glinda the good and Elphaba/the Wicked Witch were played by well known actresses Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo. These two portrayed a convincing on screen friendship and deep emotional relationships. Aside from these two actresses, other characters include Prince Fiyero played by Jonathan Bailey, The Wizard played by Jeff Goldblum, Nessa Thropp played by Marrissa Bode, Madame Morrible portrayed by Michele Yeoh, and Boq played by Ethan Slater. This cast worked hard and put in a lot of effort to make this movie enjoyable for everyone. Whether you found “Wicked” from the movies, the musical, or the books, the cast has worked to try and recreate the magical story.
Luka says, “I can tell that everyone who works on “Wicked” are super big fans of the musical and that’s really important in making the movie authentic.”
