On June 20, 2025 the movie, “K-Pop Demon Hunters”, was released on Netflix, and the rest was history.
The film climbed Netflix’s charts, remaining in the #1 spot for months, and became the most-watched movie of all time on the streaming service. According to Forbes, the movie “drummed up 325.1 million views in its first 91 days on Netflix, which equates to 541.8 million hours viewed.”
“K-Pop Demon Hunters” follows Zoe, Mira, and Rumi, three pop stars who appear to be dedicated performers motivated by the love of their fans. Behind the scenes, they are responsible for keeping the barrier between the human world and the demon realm secure. Through their music, they protect the natural world from the evil spirits that lie below.
Audiences are heavily drawn to the film because of the blend of music and animation while telling a story. “K-Pop Demon Hunters” presents themes of identity and teamwork that resonate with younger demographics.
Junior Chloe Salgado has watched the movie four times, each time better than the last. She really enjoyed how the group was able to disagree and still listen to each other’s ideas.
In addition to the picture being enjoyed, Wesh described how the soundtrack, “smashed Billboard records, even becoming the first soundtrack in history to have four songs in the Billboard Hot 100 simultaneously. The soundtrack was also nominated for four Grammys, with ‘Golden’ nominated for three of those, including Song of the Year.”
Freshman Remy Luka enjoys listening to the playlist in the car, her favorite songs being “How It’s Done” and “What It Sounds Like”. She thinks that the Saja Boys music is not good, but it is really catchy. In addition, the Huntrix vocals are insane and the beat is something that she can’t believe its from a movie because it is so good.
She was shocked at the K-Pop Demon Hunters music going up for an award saying, she wouldn’t vote for them over Addison Rae.
The film’s success also reflects the growing influence of K-Pop and internationally rooted animation. By focusing its story on K-Pop idols inspired by Asian performers, “K-Pop Demon Hunters” offers increased visibility for Asian characters in animation, an area where representation has historically been limited.
Senior Yasmeen Luzod said, “Growing up I didn’t see a lot of Asian people on screen, so when I first saw this movie that I noticed was in Netflix Top 10 for a while, I was really appreciative and really happy to be Asian!”
The movie portrays its characters as multidimensional heroes rather than harsh stereotypes, contributing to a broader push for diversity and inclusion in on-screen storytelling.
Due to the movie’s overwhelming success, Netflix has confirmed that a sequel is in development and set to be released in 2029.
