With the holiday season approaching, invitations to parties, family gatherings, and winter events start to stack up, and many people begin figuring out what they’ll wear to each one. Stores are already releasing their holiday collections, and students are searching for outfits that feel put together, seasonal, and still comfortable enough for long days.
Many have already started planning specific looks for the main events of the season.
Christmas Formal
Formal gives students the chance to dress up in long and elegant dresses. Most students gravitate toward deeper, richer colors like dark green, deep red, black, or chocolate brown, since they fit the winter color palette without being too flashy. Materials like satin tend to be the most popular material since they look refined but are still seasonal. A variety of options are available at department stores like Nordstrom or Dillard’s, as well as online websites like Peppermayo.

Christmas Eve
Christmas Eve is usually a dressier night. A lot of girls choose outfits that look polished without feeling overly formal, something appropriate for dinner with family or taking photos in front of the tree. A knit sweater paired with a simple shirt and tights is a reliable go-to. It’s easy and works for everyone. Stores like Zara and Revolve offer a lot of options that have unique and classic pieces.
“Over break, I wore my Christmas sweater because it always puts me in a festive mood,” said Julia Valenti (’26).

Christmas Day
Christmas Day tends to be much more relaxed. Since most people are opening gifts, watching movies, and lounging around the house, matching pajama sets from Aerie or Target have become super popular because of their affordability and cute designs. Many families even buy coordinating sets, which makes for funny, cohesive photos without much planning.
“I’m so excited to wear comfy clothes like pjs and sweats since I’ll be with my family all break.” said Sofie Bachs (’28).

New Year’s Eve
New Year’s is the night when people usually go for something bolder, like sequins, metallic fabrics, statement tops, or anything that shines. Whether it’s a structured mini dress, a sparkly top with pants, or anything that shines. The goal is to wear something fun and different from the more modest looks people tend to choose for Christmas. Stores like Edikted and Princess Polly typically release a wide range of New Year’s pieces, making it easy to find something that matches the energy of the night, whether you’re going to a party, dinner, or a small gathering.
Some students will be traveling to colder weather to have a white Christmas, so layers are necessary.
“I am going to New York, so I am so excited to wear so many cute warm outfits.” said Anna Bogle (’28).
