In the Ichikawa City Zoo just east of Tokyo, Japan, the monkey exhibit has gained considerable fame. However, the exhibit alone is not what has garnered the social media attention. Instead, the world has become obsessed with one young primate: Punch. In just a few weeks, Punch the monkey has become a global star, melting the hearts of millions across social media.

Punch was born last July during an exceptionally hot summer. Due to the intense heat and the inexperience of his mother, Punch was ultimately abandoned. Zookeepers began feeding Punch by hand to nurse him back to health. Still, the absence of his mother deeply affected him emotionally.

In order to cope with loneliness, zookeepers gave him a plush orangutan toy. Since then, Punch is rarely seen without his toy. He clings to it while he eats, sleeps, and moves around the exhibit. Zookeepers say that Punch hangs on to this toy for comfort and protection when he senses danger.

Punch’s attachment to his stuffed toy can be explained by his species. Punch is a macaque, or Japanese snow monkey, which is a species that can be found throughout Asia. Macaques are known to depend on their mothers for months after birth. Macaque babies continue to cling to their mothers emotionally for years, and even their entire lifetime, which makes Punch’s abandonment difficult for him. The stuffed animal serves as a placeholder for a motherly figure and a comfort for Punch as he grows.

Because of his small size, Punch has been “bullied” by his fellow monkeys inside the zoo. Videos of other monkeys pushing Punch around and him running to hold his stuffed toy have circulated around social media platforms, breaking the hearts of thousands of users.

“I have a lot of feelings about Punch,” said Assistant Principal of Student Leadership Melissa Cox. “Ultimately, I just want him to be safe and loved and happy. What breaks my heart is how his story mirrors how kids can be mean to each other when there is no need to be.”

Punch has started a phenomenon both in Japan and across the world, with the Ichikawa City Zoo receiving thousands of new visitors eagerly waiting to see Punch. Punch’s orangutan, a stuffed animal sold by IKEA, has also seen a dramatic increase in sales since Punch has gone viral.

Punch is not the first zoo animal to go viral on social media. For example, in the fall of 2024, a pygmy hippo at a zoo in Thailand named Moo Deng became an overnight Tik Tok star. Also that fall, an Australian penguin named Pesto gained millions of fans almost instantly. The public’s fascination with cute animals is nothing new. However, Punch’s story of isolation, loneliness, and acceptance seems to resonate with people in a new way.

“I think that a lot of people can resonate with his situation,” Claudia Ruiz-Carus (‘27) said. “I feel a lot of empathy for Punch because he is sad and I don’t like sadness.”

To the relief of many Punch fans, the monkey has started to make some new friends at the zoo. Pictures and videos taken by visitors show Punch hugging another monkey and jumping on its back.

Punch’s story is one of the journey from loneliness to embrace, and it has made waves across the Academy and the rest of the world. Many eagerly await more updates on the baby monkey as he grows and what adventures he will undertake next.
