The new and exciting heist at the Louvre museum has taken the internet by storm. Aside from being the primary topic of international news publications, it has garnered significant attention from social media.
On October 19, 2025, thieves stole eight items of French crown jewels worth over $100 million from the Apollo gallery at the Louvre museum in France. The robbery was completed in only seven minutes and in broad daylight. Since then, several suspects have been arrested, but so far authorities have not captured the true criminals. Not only has this event plagued news stations across the world with its peculiarity, it has also caused a surge of internet and social media attention, as well as the birth of a significant amount of memes.
The heist began at 9:30 a.m. when the thieves entered the second floor of the museum via an extendable ladder, with two of the thieves dressed as construction workers to avoid suspicion. They stole eight pieces of French crown jewels from the Napoleonic era and escaped seven minutes after entering when an alarm was triggered, unfortunately dropping one of the stolen pieces, a crown belonging to Empress Eugenie. Today, neither the thieves nor the stolen jewels have been found by French police.
Because of the odd nature of the heist, social media has turned the incident into fuel for the newest fads.
On TikTok, many have joked about the suspects of the robbery, teasing that it was done by characters like Swiper from “Dora: The Explorer” or video game icon Carmen Sandiego.
Users have also created fictional “Louvre Heist” narratives with cinematic slideshows and characters, a new plotline emerging with every video. The most relevant story, developed by @.beniways on TikTok, has gained explosive popularity, with the original video reaching 5.7 million views. It follows five made-up burglars, “Carlos 🇪🇸(19),” “Brianne 🇺🇸(18),” “Evan 🇭🇰(19,” “Vienna 🇮🇹(19),” and “Lola 🇺🇸(17),” via the TikTok video.
Due to the fame of the “headcannons,” numerous variations developing the story and joke-like videos have emerged involving the characters.

In addition to these narratives, social media has also taken a particular fascination with the “Louvre detective,” who has unfortunately been confirmed to simply be a photo-bomber in a picture taken at the crime scene. TikTok users have created a running joke out of his stylish, stereotypical-detective appearance.

The bit has gone so far that there have been a few people who have dressed up as the “dapper detective” for Halloween.

On a more serious note, the culprits have not yet been taken into custody. Most recently, four suspects have been arrested–a 34-year old former garbage collector, a 39-year old taxi driver, a 37-year old man, and a 38-year old woman. These arrests were made on account of the suspects’ DNA being found at the crime scene. So far, all of these individuals have denied involvement in the heist.
Today, the Louvre heist remains at the obscure line between a historic event and an internet trend. Although investigators are working tirelessly to crack the case, the stolen jewels have not been recovered and the criminals have not been caught.
