This past weekend, the Academy of the Holy Names’ swim and dive team made history by securing their third consecutive state championship at the FHSAA State Meet in Ocala, Florida. The team triumphed over fierce competition, finishing with a decisive victory over runner-up Mater Lakes Academy, scoring 279 points.
The meet was packed with stellar performances, showcasing yet another successful season. The 200 Medley Relay team, composed of Grace Callahan (’25), Catherine Dieffenthaller (’27), Sonja Petrov (’27), and Bella Dieffenthaller (’25), emerged victorious and earned All-American consideration for their outstanding time.
Bella Dieffenthaller (’25) continued her reign as the state champion in both the 50 and 100 freestyle events, marking her third consecutive year holding these titles and earning automatic All-American and a new school record. The 200 Free Relay team, featuring Eden Jennings (’25), Catherine Dieffenthaller (’27), Sonja Petrov (’27), and Bella Dieffenthaller (’25), also claimed the state championship and a new school record.
Bella Dieffenthaller (’25) said, “Winning my third consecutive state title in the 50 and 100 freestyle is something I could have never imagined. I am grateful for these last four years full of endless memories with the most amazing teammates and coaches.”
Individual performances were just as impressive. Eden Jennings (’25) placed 5th in the 200 freestyle and 2nd in the 100 freestyle. Catherine Dieffenthaller (’27) claimed 4th in the 200 IM and 3rd in the 100 breaststroke with a new school record and All-American consideration. Sonja Petrov (’27) placed 7th in the 100 breaststroke and 4th in the 100 butterfly. Grace Callahan (’25) finished 5th in the 200 IM and 9th in the 100 backstroke.
In distance events, Lila Biller (’27) placed 15th in the 500 freestyle, and the 400 free relay team of Eden Jennings (’25), Ella Abele (’29), Lila Biller (’27), and Grace Callahan (’25) finished 4th, adding crucial points to the team total.
The divers also delivered commendable performances. Sara-Beth Grande (’26) secured 7th place, and Adriana Lugo (’26) finished 14th, showcasing their dedication and skill.
The combined efforts of these exceptional athletes have propelled the Academy of the Holy Names to the forefront of Florida high school swimming and diving and made them the first girls’ swim and dive team in Hillsborough County to win not only a state championship but three in a row. This championship marks the team’s relentless dedication, teamwork, and hardworking coaching staff.
