According to a study conducted by the Pew Research Center, “there were 851,508 apprehensions in the 2019 fiscal year (October 2018-September 2019), a 115% increase from the previous fiscal year and the highest total in 12 years.” Apprehensions refer to the removal or arrest of non-American citizens via the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Arise had hoped that their attendance at the rally would draw attention to the immigration crisis developing at the border.

On March 3, Super Tuesday, a march had been hosted by members of Arise to promote voting rights within the community. The march had culminated at the local Development and Research Center, the designated location for polling.

Arise is an organization that promotes the personal development and empowerment of the immigrant community, especially women, children, and youth of the Rio Grande Valley through educational programs that strengthen their organized community and civic participation, The Arise Mission Statement.

Prior to its closure, youth members of Arise had repainted an external recreational center to spread positivity throughout the community.

Los colonias is a term used to refer to South Texan neighborhoods of lower-income. Inhabitants residing within “las colonias” typically invest in exterior refurbishment as opposed to interior for the sake of their income.

Gangs dominate “las colonias”. If an opposing member crosses their rival’s territory, they will be shot and killed. This rule applies to all opposing members— even those whose only contact with gangs is their shared residence. The letters “SS” serve as the territorial marking of one of the local gangs.
