On September 15, 2024, the 76th annual Emmy Awards took place at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles, California. For Academy girls, the shows nominated this year may not be familiar, here is a guide to help discover some shows that are a must-watch.

For fans of “Love Island” try, “Palm Royale”. Though the show’s plot is not alike, the colors and vibe are very similar. Taking place in Palm Beach, Florida, the main character is desperate to climb the social hierarchy to join the most exclusive club in town. There is drama, stress, and comedy, all factors in the beloved “Love Island”.

With 25 Emmy nominations, “Shōgun” was a big part of the award ceremony. It is a Japanese show taking place in 1600, it is action-packed with fighting, drama, and bloody battles. This show is a lot like two hit shows, “Game of Thrones” and “House of the Dragon”, both fictional worlds with lots of fighting.

“I love shows like this because they are intriguing and leave you on the edge of your seat and have so many different characters,” said Genevieve Carrera (’26).

Most Academy girls have watched or heard of “Shameless”, a dramatic and funny show with love plots, family drama, and sad realities. The same goes for “The Bear,” starring Jeremy Allen White, who also played Lip in the show “Shameless”. “The Bear” takes place in the same place as “Shameless”, Chicago. Carmen, the main character, is forced to come back home to run his family’s restaurant. The show goes through all of his relationships, the stress of running a small business, and the impact that family can have on you. Because “The Bear” is more dramatic and deep, it’s a mature version of “Shameless”.

“It gives a realistic portrayal of family dynamics and struggles that take place in familial relationships, as the seasons progress, attention to mental health struggles is shown varying degrees, some progress over the seasons and some are unable to overcome the struggles,” said English Teacher Sabrina Martinez.

For the sitcom laugh-out-loud lovers, most have watched shows like “New Girl” and “How I Met Your Mother”, the 2024 Outstanding Comedy Series winner “Hacks” should be on that next watch list. Starring the beloved Jean Smart, she plays an old comedian trying to rise back to the fame she used to have. Her company makes her hire a writer and the show is full of laughs, relationships, but also depth and sadness. Though it has its sad moments, it is a more mature sitcom and is sure to make you tear up.

“New Girl is one of my all time favorite shows and I just finished the pilot of Hacks, laughed out loud and can’t wait to keep watching,” said Lily Lopez (A’22).

Lastly, for those “The Office” and “Parks and Recreation” lovers the next scripted docu series that should be added to this list is “Abbott Elementary”. This show with four Emmy wins, takes place in Philadelphia and is about a public elementary school and the realities of working at a school. They have their own Jim and Pam, and an insufferable but lovable boss just like Michael Scott. Abbott is heartwarming, laugh-out-loud funny, and full of sentimental moments that are sure to have audiences needing some tissues.

“I love Abbott Elementary, I always laugh while watching it and always makes my day better,” said Emma Hodgdon (‘26).
